Today a group of volunteers from the NGO Techo returned to the community of San Mateo Mendizábel, where they built 12 emergency shelters two weeks ago.
This visit represents the next step in the long process which the organisation has taken upon itself to combat the high levels of poverty which still affect nearly half of the population of Mexico.
When speaking to the head of Techo in Puebla, Anne Karen Herrera Gonzalez, she emphasised the importance of returning to a community once the construction has happened to create a sense of responsibility on both the volunteers’ behalves, and on those of the inhabitants of the community.
She continued that the aim of this step in the process is to strengthen the relationship between Techo and the people of the town, as well as to encourage them to not merely rely on the good will of the organisation, but to work together to better the village they live in.
The work Techo is carrying out is slowly but surely helping poorer communities not just in Mexico, but throughout Latin America. If you wish to participate, search ‘Voluntarios de Techo en Puebla’.
