At 2:30 Monday morning the volcano Popocatépetl, located 43 kilometres from Puebla, erupted, scattering ashes over various parts of the city. At its most intense point of the eruption, a column of ash measuring three kilometres of height is thought to have been emitted. At this point in time a continued, but significantly smaller, amount of activity is being registered, with gas and smaller quantities of ash being emitted.
Apart from a few offices being reported as closed for the day and the International Airport of Hermanos Serdán reportedly suspending flights until 1pm due to poor visibility, the eruption has not interrupted daily proceedings.
Various health authorities are warning people to avoid leaving their homes, but if it is necessary, to cover their eyes, noses and mouths if possible. They are also stressing the importance of cleaning up any ash which has settled in drains or gutters, as this could lead to structural damage of buildings.
