Over the past week I have realised that Mother’s Day seems to have a much greater importance in Mexico than in the UK. Yes, in the UK in the weeks leading up to the celebration there are lots of pink cards, and promotions in chocolate shops and spas, but in Mexico there seems to be a much greater meaning.
Many Mexicans supposedly claim to have a much greater connection with their mothers which dates back to the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. Many Spanish soldiers fathered children with the indigenous women, then returned to Spain or died in battle, leaving many single mothers. For many Mexicans, Mother’s Day is about remembering the invasion of the Spanish, and the subsequent struggles which many mothers had to undergo in their abandonment.
The huge appreciation could be seen all over Puebla today, with celebrations going as far as to decorate the main pantheons of the city to remember the mothers who have passed away. The comedian brought a more comedic side to the proceedings in Cholula, with over three thousand five hundred mothers going to the main square to watch the performance. The mothers could also enjoy cakes, ice creams and the musical stylings of Mariachi Estrella.
