This Saturday is Children’s Day in Mexico, and it follows on from the shocking report released by UNICEF which has found that over half of the children in Mexico are living in poverty. The study also established that Puebla figures fourth in the list of states in Mexico with the highest levels of child poverty, with 1.59 million children and adolescents living in marginalisation and without basics necessities.
The astounding figure means thats 71.6% of the population in Puebla below the age of 17 live in poverty, putting the state after Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero. UNICEF did find however that the number of children living extreme poverty- meaning the lack of food, clothing, a source of health care or shelter- has decreased from 20.1% in 2010 to 17.9% in 2014.
Be that as it may, the high levels of poverty that exist are still a huge problem, if you feel that you would like to partake in helping the NGO Techo will be celebrating Children’s Day on Saturday 30th April by visiting the community Coronango. Donations of sweets can be made to the organisation’s office at 18 Calle Holmul just off the Antiguo Camino Real de Cholula; or if you wish to come along, meet at the bus stop outside Plaza San Diego at 10am on Saturday.
